‘That’s Justice for Trayvon’ And The Last Straw for the Media

If I had a 40-something year old son, he’d look like Matthew Owens.

MOBILE, Alabama — Tuesday 12:35 p.m.
Mobile police expect to make arrests in the Matthew Owens beating case today.

Owens is in critical condition at USA Medical Center, three days after police say he was beaten by “multiple people” armed with chairs, pipes and paint cans Saturday night in front of his house on Delmar Drive.

Police are downplaying the Trayvon Martin comment, but the family insists one of the attackers said “Now thats justice for Trayvon” after the attack. Trayvon Martin is the unarmed teenager police say was shot and killed February 26 by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Samford, Florida.

Monday 6:55 p.m.
Mobile police need your help to catch a mob that beat Matthew Owens so badly that he’s in critical condition.

According to police, Owens fussed at some kids playing basketball in the middle of Delmar Drive about 8:30 Saturday night. They say the kids left and a group of adults returned, armed with everything but the kitchen sink.

Police tell News 5 the suspects used chairs, pipes and paint cans to beat Owens.

Owens’ sister, Ashley Parker, saw the attack. “It was the scariest thing I have ever witnessed.” Parker says 20 people, all African American, attacked her brother on the front porch of his home, using “brass buckles, paint cans and anything they could get their hands on.”

Police will only say “multiple people” are involved.

NBC’s deceptive edit of George Zimmerman’s phone call…CNN’s sound expert swearing that he heard Zimmerman on that tape utter a racial slur…the New York Times characterizing Zimmerman as a “white Hispanic”…ABC News releasing a lossy version of the surveillance video that purported to show an unwounded Zimmerman…the New Black Panthers offering a bounty on Zimmerman’s head, unchallenged by the state or federal governments… “Justice” for Trayvon has figured into at least two separate racial attacks in recent weeks. There will be more. Racial strife is the currency of community organizers. For the media, it all makes a good story. What’s the old saying? Right — If it bleeds, it leads.

Update: Make that three known incidents of racial violence connected to revenge for Trayvon Martin. One of the participants in the Baltimore beating, which the city’s chief of police says was not a hate crime, tweets that it was.

This is what happens when a very careless and dangerous media behaves without impunity.

Reblogged this on Common Sense and commented:
A horrible result of the race baiting done by the mainstream media.

  2. Thank you sir! I agree. Things have gotten totally out of control.

  3. Greg Masceri says:

i’m not seeing the outrage in the media.

  4. Ty Watts says:

Horribly senseless crime…however, not related to Trayvon just because some knucklehead screamed it out. We don’t know the full story here, so why don’t we wait until the investigation is done? If it comes out that the mob of black americans went to the guys house for no reason except as an act of revenge for Trayvon then I would fall lock in step with your opinion; however, this seems like an unconnected act of violence that is only connected by someone uttering a word in the heat of the moment. Hopefully, the people involved are found, investigated, and put on trial as soon as possible and not a month and half later.

Jason, I believe you’re going to have a bit of egg on your face here.

    1. one person already arrested had an ONGOING fued with Owens.

    2. Owens reportedly, chased the group of black american “kids” with kitchen knives!!!!

    3. Owens has an extensive VIOLENT history full of arrests including domestic assualt and sex abuse!!!

    4. If you had a 40 year-old son that ACTED like Owens, I hope you’d consider putting him over your knee, lol

    5. Despite all this, I would agree he shouldn’t have been beaten up by a mob of people…but this isn’t racially motivated. The guy got beat up because he chased kids with kitchen knives and is probably not liked in the neighborhood he lives in.

    Wednesday 11:40 a.m.
The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office tells News 5 a warrant has been signed for one person involved in the beating of Matthew Owens.

Owens and the suspect have had an ongoing feud since 2009, according to the DA’s Office. They’re expected to surrender today.

We’re checking to see how many people the DA plans to charge.

The controversial case is the talk of Mobile. Callers lit up the phone lines this morning at FM Talk 106.5. Sean Sullivan and Wayne Gardner say they’ve never had that many calls about a single topic before.

    Wednesday 12:45 a.m.
Mobile police did not make an arrest before the end of the day as they expected. But police are in the process of serving warrants.

Neighbors say Matthew Owens chased off a group of black kids with kitchen knives after the boys lost a basketball in his sister’s yard. He was attacked by as many as 20 people with chairs, pipes and paint cans a short time later.

Based on the accusations forom angry neighbors, News 5 did some digging and learned Owens has a violent track record. The Mobile County Metro Jail log shows police have arrested Owens numerous times over the past 12 years for things like domestic violence, assault and sex abuse. His first arrest was November 4, 1990 for assault. The last time officers transported Owens to jail was last March on a domestic violence charge.

Regardless of what happened Saturday night leading up to the beating, police and most people would agree that it is not an excuse to put Owens in the ICU.
