Allen Coon vs Trayvon Martin

The similarities are that they are both tragic, especially when children are involved. In the case of Trayvon Martin, one child died and the race factor is starting to creep in.

Allen Coon was not killed but was badly burned by older black teens who deliberately targeted him for being white. Race was clearly a factor in that case.

“You get what you deserve, white boy” while attempting to immolate him using gasoline and a match. The boy stifled the fire rapidly with his shirt, called 911 himself, and hopefully will not suffer the loss of his eyesight or other permanent injury.

The police have (surprise, surprise) decided not to treat this as a hate crime.

Everyone now knows who Trayvon Martin was. No one knows much about Allen Coon. Both cases are equally tragic, but remarkably different. For what reason?

Reactions

UPDATE: The more I read and hear of Trayvon Martin, the more disgusted I become. He made a quick getaway during his little brother’s ballgame to grab a bag of skittles and a drink and was gunned down walking back? Mr. Zimmerman chased him down and shot him? Neither of the two were on Zimmerman’s property! I hope this young fellow’s family receives justice. Justice under the law. Period. Not that other crap being associated with Martin such as social and racial justice.

I feel just as strongly about the horrible incident involving Allen Coon and his family.

  2. You’re right. This is the first I’ve heard of the Allen Coon tragedy.
The concept of “hate crime” is something I have never been able to wrap my mind around. How can motive be used to determine punishment for a crime. It’s nonsense!

  3. It’s unfortunate that more hasn’t be said and learned about Coon. It’s disgusting. The school he had to attend because of the location of his home was a hotbed for racism against whites. Alas, that makes it unfitting for the left to take up.

I don’t want to take away from Martin but the left play race games and politicizing this tragedy only leaves them open for fair scrutiny.

more evidence shows that Martin was involved in the drug and gang culture, had been suspended from school for ten days (which usually takes something serious) and had assaulted a bus driver days before. It’s hard to imagine such a “good” boy being so severely reprimanded, and forced to live with his father so far from his school.

havent heard anything about this case yes the teens should be prosecuted to the full extent wrong is wrong but regaurdless of what happened between Zimmerman and Martin it wouldnt have took place if he would have listened to the cops and not followed him he should have let the cops do their job what he did in school does not give anyone the right to take his life race still plays a issue in alot of things in this world no one have the right to take the next person life and thats that

  9. yes, lauren. both are horribly tragic. And the Coon case should not vindicate the Martin case in anyway. People are only using it to show the inconsistencies.

It’s all very sickening and depressing.

  10. erica says:

Whether Trayvon was suspended, smoked weed, or got in a fight or 2 , is and should be irrelevant to his case, he was still a child no matter his skin color he was merdered by an adult, & “IF” he did smack zimmerman around …he was following him so what would anyone else do in that situation??? As for Allen , the issue at hand with this case has been brushed under the rug and tucked away they have actually spoke of closing the case…its definitly NOT a hoax , point is at the end of it all they are BOTH HUMAN , forget skin color and or whatever for once America!!!! Its getting out of hand!!!

  11. erica says:

    *murdered

  12. Michael Fair says:

Trayvon was 17 which I don’t know Florida law but in Missouri you are considered an adult at 17 they need to stop showing pictures of a 12 year old trayvon and start showing the pics of him at his real age

  13. Ty Watts says:

does it matter if he was 12, 17, or 45? What did he do to deserve being stalked and gunned down.

And how are there inconsistencies in the two stories? The kids in Allen Coon’s case are in jail and off the street. Zimmerman is still walking around.

Allen Coon’s case has made headlines locally, there’s no need for a national narrative!
Trayvon’s case would have been kept locally too, IF the police had done there job in the first place….it’s been a month of snow balling and now it’s out of control. You want to make this into “oh, cuz a black kid got shot everyone wants to highlight it” which is so beyond true…you’re trying to turn this into some sort of reverse racism. The only reason the WORLD knows about Trayvon is because Andy Griffin and Barney Fife screwed up the investigation and didn’t do what they should have done. If those black kids in Allen Coon’s case weren’t arrested you’d see an outcry like none other right now, but they were and justice will be served. So how about we focus on getting justice in Trayvon’s case?

  14. “If those black kids in Allen Coon’s case weren’t arrested you’d see an outcry like none other right now…”

Balderdash and rubbish. There have been similar cases of horrific black-and-white crime where the perpetrators weren’t given their due, and there’s been NOTHING like what we are seeing in the Martin case.

I have listened to the recording of Zimmerman’s phone call. It is clear that he had an overly high opinion of himself and did something dumb by following the kid when he was explicitly advised not to. He provoked the kid, who (it now appears) himself overreacted by attacking Zimmerman. And beating him up pretty badly from the looks of it. Zimmerman had a gun, he shot the kid… the kid died. This is a tragedy, but it’s not a cold-blooded hate crime by any stretch of the imagination. (And no, Z. didn’t say “@##$$#@ coons” either, he said “punks.”) We have evidence from his family and friends (black friends I might add) that he wasn’t a racist.

The Coon case, on the other hand, was a blatant, explicit, in-your-face hate crime. And it is not isolated. Not even close.

  15. Correction: Black ON white.

And I think it’s safe to use an argument from silence that this country isn’t exactly a hotbed of white-on-black crime, since the left would be raising hell way more often if it were.

  16. Hey, thanks for stopping by. You have a cool site!

Sorry this story is what brought you here. It’s getting depressing.

  17. Ty, because people like me are not calling for the lynching or arrests of Zimmerman doesn’t mean I agree with his actions. He was a bit overzealous and wanna be bounty hunter. I don’t agree with Martin’s actions either but then again, he was a kid. But he was no angle.

I want the law to speak. Not the New Black Panthers, or fat Al Sharpton or the jobless wonder Jesse Jackson. I don’t want black people wearing t-shirts that say pu*** a** cracker. That crap gets us know where and fuel emotions that leads to riots and very other excuse to behave badly.

There’s a very real chance he could face manslaughter. I wouldn’t protest. He may be let off due to the laws already in the books.

  18. kushibo says:

Both cases are equally tragic, but remarkably different.

No, they may be equally egregious, but they are not equally tragic. One kid has singed eyelashes and the other is dead.

  19. Actually, I was also going to say they’re not equally tragic. But that’s because the Martin shooting really was a tragedy, while the other was a crime of pure evil. The Martin case is precisely the sort of case for which I reserve the word. But if it’s just a clear-cut evil action, that’s what I call it.

  20. Thanks Jason. I found it by searching “trayvon martin” and “allen coon” to see if there was anybody anywhere saying exactly what you said.

  21. Martin says:

This is the first I’ve heard of the Allen Coon story which is sad, Trayvon’s case is sad as well because he died and if the official report is all true it was just for a bag of skittles. It is sad to think of the racial divide this country and world has, we are equal race is only a concept we created based on certain aspects but it doesn’t exist in actuality. The European slave traders opened up a pandora box to constant racial anger and tension here in the states, because of them its not safe to human; regardless of race.

  22. kushibo says:

One other thing from the original OP:
Allen Coon was not killed but was badly burned by older black teens who deliberately targeted him for being white.

If what we are being told is true, this is an appalling case, but I don’t think it’s accurate to say he was “badly burned.”

In particular, I’d like to point out that there has been something of a hoax going on related to Allen Goin/Coon’s purported photo. The badly burned person you see is in fact an Afghan woman who’d set herself on fire in 2008 or earlier.

  23. Kushibo, knock it off. You can disagree all you like but don’t start bringing in idiotic conspiracy theories that this didn’t happen, or if it did it wasn’t as bad as it seemed. “singed eyelashes.” very classy.

The photo may be a fake. but the incident isn’t. don’t be like that if you plan on commenting more.

  24. Ty Watts says:

    Jason bradley – I agree.

I want justice and the only reason you see these black groups out is because Trayvon’s family was not being treated correctly. They weren’t being given proper justice. This has snowballed out of control and it’s the police departments fault.

yankeegospel girl – please post some stories of these acts where a black person was not properly investigated for attacked or killing a white person and there was no outcry. I just find it hard to believe. I can post an article from the same city (Sanford) of a black homeless man being beaten by the Police Lt’s son and the case being swept under the rug. The reason this gets blown up in the media, is because HISTORICALLY you have injustices like this in the black communities and they are swept under the rug. Remember Rodney King…if it wasn’t on tape it would have been swept under the rug. After the footage was released it came out that LAPD has accosted several minorities in similiar fashion. Emmit Teal…Gena 6…etc etc. It happens far to often and that’s why you it’s starts snowballing you get this effect.

I’m not sure what you mean by “idiotic conspiracy theories.” The news reports indicate Allen Goin (not Allen Coon, by the way) was not “doused” with gasoline and set on fire. His injuries were redness to his face when gasoline exploded in front of him and singed eyebrows.

The case is appalling, if what he reported to the police is true, because of the race-based harassment and bullying perhaps exacerbated or even encouraged by a teacher.

It is very troubling, however, that detractors to the tragic killing of Trayvon Martin and what it entails — an embodiment of harassment for “walking/driving while Black” and, perhaps, local police departments not taking cases where Blacks are the victim very seriously (a problem that keenly exists in cases of Black-on-Black crime) — have decided to use Allen Goin/Coon as an antidote to the Trayvon Martin killing.

That right there is questionable, given the fundamental differences (including the Kansas City Police Department’s apparent cooperation from the beginning), but what makes it egregious is that, in order to make the two cases seem similar in degree, the Allen Goin/Coon case has been exaggerated, starting with the description (“doused with gasoline”) and the use of a picture purported to be Allen but actually someone who suffered burns far worse.

  26. Jazz says:

Looks like you need another “update” to your posting given the release of the police surveillance tape. Zimmerman shows 0 signs of beating beaten or punched. Or having shot someone while they were on top of him. No blood or cuts, nada. Totally goes against what the police said themselves.

To answer your question of “for what reason” – simple. I don’t know the details of the Goin (Coon??) case, however, if the suspects were arrested – THERE is your difference. If they were able to do something like that and then be released to go home, there’s no way in hell we would not hear more about this. Justice is being served (hopefully so).

  27. Klaas says:

I’m Dutch, and even I have heard of Treyvon. I haven’t heard of the many, many gruesome murders of whites in the US, of which I only catch wind after cases such as Treyvon’s are drummed up. A case where five black people raped and tortured to death a white couple was suppressed in the American media, even. Similar examples are too numerous to count. On top of that, black-on-white violence is never judged to be a hate crime, even when it clearly is.

It’s pretty clear that the system is biased against, rather than in favour of, whites. Probably because of some ridiculous notion that one way to decrease racism is to “balance” it.

  28. Jazz, I’ll update when a little more is shared. There’s another news source saying you can see a head injury. Besides, the EMT’s also fill out there own reports. Their reports reflected the same thing as I understand it. Secondly, they also cleaned up his face and head. It’s what EMTs do.

We’ll wait until tomorrow and see what we got then.

  29. Klass, that’s a popular sentiment shared among many.

  30. Ty Watts says:

    Klass,

What proof do you have that the injustice you were mentioned was “surpressed”?

I just can’t believe that you guys feel you’re being impartial in this.

You are showing cases where people are arrested, charged, and indicted and are in jail and juxtaposing them with a case where the guy was not arrested(booked), charged, and is still running around free.

Let’s be fair here…you can’t equate this case with a case where someone is in jail serving time. Whether they are charged as racial or not is subject to interpretation.

  31. G. Frasier says:

Who actually KNOWS that the Zimmerman guy did not turn around and start walking back to his car /truck after he was informed that they did not need him to follow the Martin guy? Anyone?

  32. kushibo says:

    G. Frasier, considering that the “wrestling” and the shooting took place away from the parking area, in a walkway between two long rows of buildings (see here), it does not seem that Zimmerman went back to his car.

  33. Ed says:

When someone(Allen Coon’s mother evidently) puts a fake picture on their Facebook page to drum up sympathy it certainly calls into question the rest of the story.

  34. kushibo says:

Ed, it was almost certainly not Allen Coon’s mother who put up the fake picture on the Facebook page. Nor, I believe, was the FB page owner who put it up aware that it was fake (although she should have done due diligence and checked it out before using it as a profile pic).
