Romney has enjoyed success in the polls, and subsequently at the voting booths. What he has lacked is the entire conservative base getting behind him. If he had enjoyed that from the beginning it’s very likely the GOP primary would have been settled at the close of January. So after giving Gingrich and Santorum a few tries, it looks like Mitt is finally receiving the nod.
