After I posted that French parenting skills might be surperior to those displayed by present day American parents I got some mildly provocative commentary. This wasn’t that surprising though since readers here range from center-right to fairly ardent conservatives, so any topic indicating Frogs are superior to Yanks is going to lead some pushback. Nevertheless, animus towards the French aside, I still stand by my larger point, that for all of their craziness they are at the least allowing their parents to parent and reminding their kids they are still kids. As a general rule of thumb in our society that is no longer the case.
However, I am pleased to report that there is a growing cadre of American parents who might have had it with our society’s penchant for entitlement parenting. Well…one dad took to Facebook with a .45 and a laptop to correct his 15 year-old daughter’s self-indulgent, entitled, pampered attitude.

This dude isn`t French, as he did`nt GIVE UP after one shot, but, did the daughter SURRENDER to her fathers plea to be civil, or simply RUN AWAY with the local farm boy to the fair to GIVE IN to her penchant for FREEDOM FRIES? Gotta love the French…….and the mustard.
As an educator (at various age levels from high school to day care), I can tell you with great confidence, that MANY other nations’ parents exemplify greater skill in parenting than Americans do. I really don’t know what happened to “common sense,” but it no longer lives in America! Americans are consumed with “image” and “success,” so they sacrifice the attention and affection children crave for that upgrade in cars, or TV, or clothing, or … whatever, and surrender the responsibility for “training” their children is surrendered to the state from as early as 3 mo old up! Very sad!
Rick, lol, I hear yah about the Frenchies. This good ole’ boy, if he was French, would have probably posted a video surrendering to the laptop and his daughter. But being solidly American he emptied the magazine into the laptop and grounded his daughter until her 35th birthday. I guess the ball is in her court now.
That being said though, we need to keep this in perspective. As I have previously indicated, other societies and cultures have rooted themselves firmly in the family. We have moved further and further away from the family. In fact it can be argued that we have made a consorted effort as a society to incentivise single-parenthood, divorce, and incomptent child-rearing practices.
Barbara, I commend you for being an educator. It is often an overlooked and under-appreciated vocation. I would like to thank you for your contribution, espeically in the present day school environment. People do not realize the pressures you are under or the challenges you are facing.
